Moving Mountains' New Light EP

New Light contains four tracks in total, all acoustic and re-imagined versions of songs on the band’s previous offerings Waves and Pneuma. The first track, Alleviate, starts off promising; it’s got a softness to it that makes it soothing, a song that it is easy to imagine being played over an emotional montage in a film. The vocals work brilliantly with everything else, and all elements of it blend in nicely, a great track to draw readers in.

Ode We Will Bury Ourselves contains similar elements to Alleviate, but the vocals make it stand out and, again, it’s a nice blend. Together, the two tracks work well and really do want to make you hear the originals from the band. However, the last two on the EP – Where Two Bodies Lie and 8105 – sound too similar to the rest to really stand out. The four songs sound, almost, like they could just be one long track. Although they are all good, there’s too much similarity between them to put them next to each other.

The fact that these are new versions of old songs makes New Light worth listening to as a fan of the band; acoustic and re-imagined tracks are always interesting and more often than not enjoyable when you know the original songs. Worth checking out, especially if you’ve listened to Waves and Pneuma, and although the versions on New Light are similar-sounding, that doesn’t detract from the fact that the songs themselves are, individually, really good. Good enough that, if possible, it’d be worth checking the band out on their upcoming tours, supporting Coheed and Cambria and headlining with support from Pianos Become the Teeth.
