Review: Certain People I Know - Self Titled

Written By Unknown on Sunday, July 29, 2012 | 2:24 AM

Count Your Lucky Stars Records are one of the most exciting labels out there at the moment, so to hear that they are releasing an album by a new band fronted by the emo legend Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes) it certainly gets my pulse racing.

The band is Certain People I Know, they have been together since 2009 and also feature Braid/Hey Mercedes drummer Damon Atkinson. Apparently they haven’t played too many shows together in their short existence but that hasn’t stopped them making an album of mature and instantly likeable rock songs.

The sound of the record could be seen as a continuation of the work done in Hey Mercedes, it has more in common with them than Bob Nanna’s other bands, which is fine by me. But Certain People I Know definitely to stand out in their own right. Especially with the gorgeous second vocals of Lauren LoPiccolo. Her sweet and underplayed vocal delivery really helps the album come alive, songs that she contributes vocals on like ‘Our Lady Of Guadalupe’, ‘All you gotta do is show’ and the lovely last song ‘How was the show (politics) can be counted as my favourites from the record.

Certain People I Know have achieved something which is quite a difficult task, they have made a rock album that while having really catchy songs that could be seen to have mass appeal, they have done it in such a way that it retains all
of their indie credibility. It’s an album that you’d always wish the Foo Fighters would make if only they could remember how to write decent songs. A great, solid record, that has a laid back and relaxed feel where nothing is forced, Just
really, really enjoyable. Certain People I Know will certainly be getting many repeat plays on my stereo this summer.

The album comes out on August 7, you can pre order it here .
