Review: I Call Fives "Someone That's Not You"

On March 20th, I Call Fives release their teaser EP Someone That’s Not You, a sample of what is to come on their full-length album in June. Judging by the teaser, the record should be a good one. There are three great things about pop-punk; one, break-up songs that have that strange mix of anger and hopefulness. Two, acoustic songs. Three – a good cover song. The teaser contains all three.
Someone That’s Not You, the first song on the EP, could be tagged as a typical pop-punk break-up ballad. That doesn’t make it bad – on the contrary, it’s a formula that works brilliantly because who hasn’t felt like that about someone? Break-up songs work because they’re easy to relate to, and this one, on all levels, has that. It’s not generic; it’s fast, catchy with a great beat and is oh so fun to sing along to. The song hits the right tone; both with tune and lyrics, perfect for when, after a breakup, the angry feeling hits.
Second on the teaser is the fast, energetic Backup Plan. With the usual energy of most pop-punk songs, it’s a strange cross between happy, hopeful sounding music but with an underlying anger. Essentially, it’s a song about moving on, and works all the better for it, too.
The acoustic Lakeview offers a nice change of pace from the first two songs. Tune wise, it’s softer, almost relaxing in a way. Like the others, it’s a break-up song, but this one does sound much sadder than the others. Still, it has some great lines; I’ll save revenge for another day and I shouldn’t have to scream just to get your attention feel perfect, and like I said before, it’s relatable; anyone who’s ever been taken for granted, ignored or just overlooked can identify, completely, with the song. Anyone who hasn’t can just enjoy the song for what it is; a tale of someone who realises that, maybe, their relationship isn’t/wasn’t as perfect as they thought. Plus, well, again it’s all about moving on.
Covers can be a double-edged sword; make it a direct imitation and it’s bland, give it too much of your own style and it becomes barely unrecognisable. Saying that. I Call Fives manage to hit the right mix between their own style and the tone of Third Eye Blind’s original for their version of How’s It Gonna Be. The cover is slightly faster, has a stronger beat and fits in nicely with the rest of the EP. It feels, to quote Goldilocks, just right.
The EP is, to put it bluntly, awesome, and anyone lucky to go to the Vans Warped Tour will get a chance to see the band live, not to mention the fact that they’re headlining the Pure Noise Records tour. So, check out the EP, eagerly wait for the full-length release and go see them live. From Someone That’s Not You alone, it’s easy to see that it’ll be worth it.
