Balance and Composure’s self-titled 7” via No Sleep Records is out today on Hot Topic and digitally as well. It’s a given that you can expect something good to come out when this band enters the studio, and their acoustic compilation of three awesome songs from their ‘Separation’ album that was released last year inevitably pushes one’s expectations from the band higher.
Balance and Composure (B & C) make beautiful music that’s melodic, yet raw, balanced and composed, no pun intended. ‘Separation’ came out on May 10, 2011 and was the band's debut full length album. It may have received some mixed reviews, praised for the lyrics and performance while some critics seemed a bit unsure about the extent of the band’s talent.
Personally I thought Separation was great and was actually unsure if the latest album would do justice to the original versions of the three songs it features; ‘Stonehands,’ 'Separation,’ and ‘More To Me.’ However the album has turned out to be a beautiful concoction of music. B & C has kept it simple bringing greater focus on the lyrics of their songs, as well as their creative skills.
With ‘Stonehands’ they have out-done the original version of the song, with its hauntingly melodic vocals and beautiful work on the guitar. ‘Separation,’ just like the original creates the discomfort of distance, while ‘More to Me’ takes one on an emotionally sincere journey and creates a craving to repeat the playlist. The latter track is my favourite. When Jon Simmons sings ,” I thought the trees were begging me to climb/ There’s more to me that I have yet to find, “ the track takes a turn that could give you goose-bumps.
Although I enjoyed the full length album, for some reason I find this self-titled acoustic album more appealing and the right tracks were chosen for B & C's latest release.
The five-piece band originated in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and it was formed, not so long ago, in 2007. But these guys are no newbie’s to the scene. Brandishing their skill, talents and reputation for creating some good music over the past 4 to 5 years along with their LP and their latest album, are the release of their EPs, ‘I just Want To Be Pure, and ‘Only Boundaries,’ followed by 2 splits, one with Scranton and the other with Tiger’s Jaw. Jon Simmons leads the band on vocals and guitar with Andrew Slaymaker (guitar and vocals), Matthew Warner (bass), Erik Peterson (guitar) and Bailey Van Ellis (drums). They are currently on tour with La Dispute.
If you’re already familiar with Balance and Composure’s previous work I would definitely recommend their latest release, if not, it’s time to get acquainted. You can find out more about them through the following links:
