Review: Mixtapes - Even On The Worst Night

Written By Unknown on Monday, June 18, 2012 | 9:36 PM

On June 26th, Mixtapes will be out with their full-length album, ‘Even on The Worst Nights.’ Needless to say the band is very excited and so are fans. The combination of a great sound, good vibes and a cool sense of humor that the band bring forward in their music and performances has won them a strong, steadily-expanding fan base.

Their latest release recorded by Eric Tuffendsam at Moonlight Studios, is their second LP which precedes two years worth of hard-work and dedication. Beginning with their first  album, ‘Maps’ which was 18 minutes long, the band has made 5 separate releases in this period of time, including a split with Direct Hit! and several free EPs.

The band describes their upcoming album as, “a mixture of songs dealing with losses, death and hurtful situations, and also a thank you letter to those people who have been here to make life easier.”

'Seven Mile’  is the opening track of the album which then drifts onto a collection of fun tracks with moving lyrics that sometimes push forward opinions, and sometimes tell stories to create a sense of nostalgia in the listener.

For those of you who have been following the band, you may already be familiar with the two awesome tracks that the band recently released from the album, ‘Hey Ma Pt. 2’ and ‘I’m Wearing The Device’ (Bridge, Water). I can assure you that you can expect nothing short of awesome from the rest of the album as well.  Both vocalists, Maura and Ryan have great voices. Though you here Maura a lot less, when you do it perfectly compliments that of Ryan’s. The  drumming is particularly catchy with the rhythm and bass of the guitars standing out especially  in songs such as ‘Indian Summer’ and ‘You Must not be From Around Here’.

The entire performance and recording has such a good feel to it that you just want to sit back , turn the volume up and enjoy. ‘Just When You Thought it Was Over’ is ultimately one of my favorites. So is the closing track, Mt. Hope. The variations in these songs and the work done on the tracks is  simply kickass. Moreover, Mixtapes has a way of writing  lyrics  that are easy to relate to. As Ryan sings in, ‘Something Better,’  the album definitely sounds like, “the soundtrack of our lives.”

Back in 2010, when Ryan Rockwell and Maura Weaver began writing songs together they began to lay the foundation of what today is Mixtapes. Both artists lead the band with guitars and vocals, while Michael Remley later came in as the bassist and Boone Haley became the drummer. With the band complete, in love with performing, recording and making music, they left the security of their lives behind to commit themselves to making music as Mixtapes. They are now signed to No Sleep Records and in this short span of their musical careers in Cincinnati, Ohio, the foursome constantly offers listeners music, that in my opinion serves as a great companion, "even on the worst nights."

The album is already up for pre-order on iTunes.
