Review: Troubled Coast – I’ve Been Thinking About Leaving You

Seven piece Bay Area based Troubled Coast pack a punch with their latest EP, I’ve Been Thinking About Leaving You. Released by Pure Noise on the 17th January 2012, the band draws you in with the brilliant Patient Hands, a song that renders you unable to remain still. The vocals, throughout each song, rise above the music, hitting hard. The music itself blends together, a fusion of post-hardcore sounds creating a rousing feeling, and it’s not hard to imagine a crowd whipped up into a frenzy as a result.
Similarly, it’s hard not to picture a whole crowd chanting along with lines like “take your peacetime love” in the breathtaking La Jetee, even if, in the track itself, only a few singers can be heard. Without a doubt, these songs would be amazing to hear live but, failing that, the EP itself stands on its own, easy enough to get lost in.
Troubled Coast have, in the past, been accused of imitating their predecessors too obviously. Although
some of the songs do sound strangely familiar, it’s in an, oddly, refreshing, new way. The rhythm of all four songs almost catches you off-guard and it’s hard, after a couple of listens, to get the beat of it out of your head. It’s an album that, although it only has four tracks, you can easily get lost in, as well as listen to again and again.
