Adicted to The Adicts: Review - 'All The Young Droogs'

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 | 2:22 AM

Bring the skeletons out of your closet and wear them proud. Pull out your eccentric attires, and make yourself up as you please. The Adicts are reaching out to young and old droogs alike, with their 10th studio album celebrating more than 35 years of confetti, madness, good times and undeniably good music. ‘All The Young Droogs,’ is set to be released on September 11, this year, under DC-Jam Records.

“You're welcome unto the World of The Adicts!!” announces Pete Dee, a founding member and lead guitarist of this infectious, outspoken, legendary punk act.

They stumbled onto the stage almost naively, as per what Pete Dee told Bandbucket in an exclusive interview. “All we wanted to do is play gigs get sloshed and enjoy the girls and go to football matches...It was rock'n'roll and fun.”  The Adicts have been around for too long to be ignored by the music industry, but the mainstream media isn’t “mainstream” for no reason. “It would be nice if the Music Media thought the same & gave us the respect we deserve. But that’s been like that since day one. We must have pissed some one up there off,” laughs Pete. “I wish we had a wider appeal. Like getting radio play. I think we are on some industry Blacklist. Who cares eh!” Exactly! Who cares?! It’s been 37 years down the line they’ve made their mark as one of the most influential bands of our time by establishing their identity, with their music and eccentricities, while hosting some awesome live shows.

It’s hard to miss these guys, with the grin of a jester glaring through the band’s logo, portraying the face of lead singer, Keith “Monkey” Warren. He’s backed by Pete Dee Davison(lead guitar), Scruff” Ellis (guitar), Kid Dee Davison, (drums), and Shahen (bass), all clad in white.

3 years have passed since the release of ‘Life Goes on,’ their last album and to promote their upcoming album The Adicts will be touring through US and Brazil with the ‘Brothers of Brazil’ from the 6th  of September. Pete’s advice to fans is, “If I was an Adicts fan I'd go out of my way to see us Now. For it could always be the last time” The band is at that stage in life where they’d like to take some time off to take care of personal issues, and with age and it’s limits setting in, they are unsure of how long they can go. Nonetheless, he adds, “I personally will go as long as I can.”

And now these old droogs have come up with another timeless, fun album, that will ease your mind and make you want to move in ridiculously cool ways.

‘All the Young Droogs,’ came about being funded by the Pledge Campaign, allowing fans to directly fund the making of the album, by pledging on various items that belong to band members, as well as a copy of the album.

The upcoming release is made up of a compilation of songs that evoke a sense of nostalgia, the good kind, for those familiar with the music of the band. The tracks are upbeat with fun twists and turns and awesome guitar solos.

The opening track, ‘Battlefield W1,’ is a track with motivating sound, and it clearly states how The Adicts, have  and always will be up for a challenge. The album then moves on to more fun songs such as ‘Wild,’ ‘Stomper,’ ordering, and not requesting you to step out of your comfort zone and be free. “I won’t grow up and you can’t make me!” go the lyrics. The following tracks go on to speak about friendship, and love, even some kinkiness, such as in the  extremely catchy, ‘Give it to me Baby!’  The title track, ‘All The Young Droogs,’ is one on growing up, and reassurance and with its almost ska-like vibe it makes a great song. The album also includes ‘Horrorshow,’ a fun song, that is a take on today's world. It is also being exclusively streamed on Noisecreep.com.

Altogether ‘All The Young Droogs,’ is another addictive classic from  The Adicts, set to further engrave their impact on the music scene.

This punk act came about around 1975 in Ipswich, UK, before a large number of their current fans were probably even conceived. Initially the band started off as Afterbirth and The Pinz. Monkey states on the band's website, “We just did what punk bands did until we developed our own style and voice.” He goes on to say, “We started to dress white to be different,” at a time when black was becoming the thing  and the 'droog' image caught on from the infamous, Clockwork Orange. The band was highly influenced by it,  “not for the violence, more for the teenage angst.”

They began making their mark with 'Songs of Praise', in 1981, which featured the fan favorite 'Viva la Revolution.' The lyrics go, “ Come out of the closet, come out of the hole, come out of the woodwork, come into the fold.”  Not only have their lyrics reached out to millions, their  music stood out, among that of other punk bands. When most punk bands sang about grimmer, heavier topics, filled with rage, The Adicts came on stage, looking divinely cool in white, with more light hearted lyrics, filled with irony, sarcasm and humor spun around uptempo music.

The world’s on a roll and it’s hard to keep yourself going steady, but the band has stood their ground, maintaining their sound and energy inspite of the changes in the world around them. Although Pete’s take on the latest music isn’t positive, in his opinion, when asked about what makes a good musician, he states,  “your either born with the “GIFT” or you end up playing in a zillion shit bands to impress yourself.” He goes on to say, “ Just simply write some songs & get out there & see if you can do it & believe in oneself. It's not easy. I don't practice at all so I'm not really a good musician. I just feel what I play without my ego getting in the way and let the music do the talking. I don't care about the music industry anymore. It has been monopolized by fetal matter. It's the same old shit over & over. The real talent is still out there.”

The band has been through it's share of struggles. “There were times we nearly broke up. But we haven't and, we didn't, and we will probably play forever.” Pete adds, “ViVa! We are warriors!"

However the band started off, the tides of change have yet to wear them out. With the kind of fan base they have established their influence will echo through ages.
